Adult Autism Therapy

Understanding Autism in Adulthood

For many people, Autism isn’t diagnosed until adulthood. That late discovery can feel both validating and overwhelming. Maybe you’ve always known you experienced the world differently, or maybe you spent years masking — trying to blend in while feeling misunderstood and exhausted.

Adult Autism therapy offers a space to unlearn old survival strategies, honor your true self, and explore what life looks like when you stop hiding and start living authentically.

Common Experiences of Autistic Adults

Autism presents differently for everyone, but if you’re here, you may relate to:

  • Feeling exhausted from masking at work, in relationships, or socially

  • Struggling with boundaries, people-pleasing, or perfectionism

  • Sensory overwhelm that makes everyday tasks harder than they “should” be

  • Intense special interests or hyperfocus

  • Difficulty with small talk or feeling “out of sync” in social settings

  • Feeling pressure to meet neurotypical expectations

  • Experiencing trauma, bullying, or exclusion in the past

None of these experiences mean you’re broken. They’re reflections of a brain and body that process the world uniquely.

How Neurodivergent Counseling Can Help

Therapy is not about changing who you are. It’s about supporting you in living as fully yourself as possible.

In therapy, we’ll work on:

  • Learning where you’ve hidden your true self to fit in, and finding ways to show up authentically.

  • Exploring your sensory profile, communication style, and needs with compassion.

  • Building safer, more connected relationships while honoring your energy.

  • Challenging the internalized belief that you need to “be less” to be loved.

  • Developing sustainable ways to handle overwhelm, burnout, and executive functioning challenges.

My Approach to Adult Autism Therapy

At Mental Masters Counseling, I specialize in working with young millennials and Gen Z adults who identify as autistic, ADHD, or both — often with overlapping trauma.

My approach is:

  • Neurodivergence-affirming: No pathologizing, no “fixing.” Just honoring how your brain works.

  • Gentle and playful: Therapy doesn’t have to feel clinical or heavy all the time. We can be silly and deep in the same space.

  • Trauma-informed: Many autistic adults have experienced chronic invalidation, bullying, or complex trauma. We hold space for both.

  • Dynamic: Every session is tailored to your needs. Some days you’ll want tools, other days you’ll want validation. Both are welcome.

Why Adult Autism Therapy Matters

Without support, many autistic adults feel isolated, misunderstood, or burned out from trying to navigate a neurotypical world.

Therapy provides a place where:

  • Your quirks are celebrated, not criticized

  • You can safely process the grief of missed or late diagnoses

  • You learn to advocate for yourself in relationships, work, and healthcare

  • You begin to believe that you’re worthy of love and rest — exactly as you are

FAQs

1. Do I need a formal autism diagnosis to start therapy?

No. Many of my clients come to me while self-identifying as autistic. Whether or not you have a formal diagnosis, therapy can help you explore your experiences and find strategies that work for your brain.

2. How is autism therapy different from “regular” therapy?

Traditional therapy often assumes neurotypical communication and coping styles. Adult autism therapy adapts tools and approaches so they actually fit your needs, instead of making you feel like you need to change who you are.

3. Can autism therapy also address trauma or ADHD?

Yes. Many autistic adults also live with trauma, CPTSD, or ADHD. My practice integrates trauma-informed therapy with neurodivergent-affirming care, so we can address all the parts of your experience.
